A Little Holiday

Rachel and I took what we are called a "holiday." Since Eddie had to be at a Case IH meeting in Nashville, Rachel and I (well, actually me!) decided to tag along (if Dad would Okay it). Nana was sweet to let the guys come hang out with her and Poppy. And the staff at the Opryland were gracious to upgrade us to a Cascade room (and to give us a late checkout too). Ah... being lazy is nice ever once in awhile. I took my laptop of course and a bag of books. Eddie even treated me to "breakfast in bed" with a blueberry muffin and hot tea. What a sweetie!Less than a year ago, flood waters caused the Opryland Hotel to close for 6 months. As a matter of fact, it has only been reopened for a couple of months. I would have never known the Cascades looked like the above picture last year.
Rachel and I found a wonderful little restaurant where I enjoyed a veggie burger. What a treat to eat without interruptions and I didn't even have to share!

Here's what Little Lady enjoyed... looking out our balcony doors. We could hear the waterfall right outside our room. She loved it!

We ventured up to the sixth floor of the Garden Conservatory to check out the view. It's so funny how people react to babies. When we got off the elevator, there was an open door of a room being cleaned. I spoke to the housekeeper and the next thing I knew, she had invited us inside to see the suite. Would you believe it was $1500 a night? Ha! Not for me... it didn't even have a balcony. Rachel and I much preferred our 2nd floor Cascade Room. Thanks Sweetheart for a wonderful little holiday.

Tracking Cookies are Crummy, says Search Engine Startpage.com
Privacy-friendly URL Generator supports snoop-free settings

"Tracking cookies are not only obnoxious, they leave crumbs that lead
marketers straight to your door," says Robert Beens, CEO of
Startpage.com, the World's Most Private Search Engine.

So he's making it his mission to educate consumers about the "Internet
crumbs" cookies leave behind. He's also encouraging consumers to delete
tracking cookies from their computers on January 28 in honor of
International Data Privacy Day.

Tracking cookies are "a huge privacy problem," according to Beens, who
accuses advertisers of being information vultures. "A better name for
them might be 'stalker cookies'," he says.

What some Internet companies are doing with consumer information is
unconscionable, Beens contends. "Most consumers are unaware of how most
big websites and search engines capture user cookie information and IP
addresses to record their search terms, the times of their visits, and
the links they click."

He points out that search engine records are especially invasive because
they can reveal extremely personal information, like someone's
interests, family situation, and medical conditions. These profiles are
often stored in giant databases and used for marketing
purposes. They can also be hacked or subpoenaed.

"Internet information can come back to haunt you," Beens warns. "If you
search for information about diabetes, for example, that could be added
to your consumer profile and potentially raise a red flag if you apply
for a new job or a life insurance policy."

Beens' company offers consumers a cookie-free service, even when they
want custom search settings. Startpage's new URL Generator encodes these
settings in an anonymous URL that can be bookmarked or used to create an
address bar search box. For example, if someone prefers large font and
family-friendly filtering, the URL will automatically deliver searches
just the way he or she likes them at every visit.

Startpage has always offered a non-identifying, anonymous cookie option
for storing custom settings. This is still available for those users who
selectively delete tracking cookies and know how to whitelist
Startpage's privacy-friendly cookie.

"Our new URL Generator is just one more way we're offering innovative,
privacy-friendly searches and helping to change how the Internet does
business," says Beens. "We believe that privacy is a fundamental right
and the basis of a free society. We're helping consumers enjoy all the
Internet has to offer without giving up that right."

In the twinkiling of an eye

Once again I am reminded of how quickly life can change. Little did we know on Sunday afternoon that when we waved good-bye to Bo it would be our final good-bye. The memory of my father-in-law playing Woody with Jonathan will be a memory I cherish. Woody's missing hat concerning Jonathan. But Bo pointed out that Cowboy Woody was missing his gun too.
I was especially glad that Isaac snapped a photo of Bo with Rachel. It will have a special place in her baby book.

It is never easy to say good-bye to someone we love. What a wonderful assurance that our good-byes are only temporary.

in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable,
and we will be changed.

Snow Day

Brr... the weather was correctlly predicted this time. We ended up with about 10-11 inches of snow. It was so "powdery" that is wasn't much fun the first day. Eddie even went into town and got Jonathan a coat, mittens, and boots so he could go out to play. The best part for us was having Eddie at home from work for 2 days!

We had lunch with some friends yesterday. Jonathan gets wild when we get him out in public... ha ha.

OVER TWO MILLION CHILDREN ARE HOMESCHOOLED
________________________________________

Purcellville, VA—In a new study released today the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) estimates there were over 2 million children being homeschooled in the United States in 2010. “The growth of the modern homeschool movement has been remarkable,” said Michael Smith, president of HSLDA. “Just 30 years ago there were only an estimated 20,000 homeschooled children,” he added.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2008) there were an estimated 54 million K–12 children in the U.S. in spring 2010, which means homeschoolers account for nearly 4% of the school-aged population, or 1 in 25 children.
Today, homeschoolers can be found in all walks of life and with a wide variety of curriculum options, and a proven record of academic as well as social success, homeschooling is rapidly becoming a mainstream education alternative.
The NHERI study used data from both government and private sources in order to arrive at the 2 million figure.
Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is a 28-year-old, 85,000 member non-profit organization and the preeminent national association advocating the legal right of parents to homeschool their children.

Homeschooling Thoughts

I am just loving the recent news reports of growth in the homeshcooling community. As well as statistics on how our homeschooled students are scoring higher than their peers, doing so well in their college pursuits, and are "in demand" at college admissions offices. However, it saddens me when the media wants to find a bad situation and blame an unrelated circumstnace on homeschooling. If only we could share some of the many phone calls and emails that we recieve through Mid-East THEA. They are from parents that long to provide their children with the very best education. Just this week I received a call from one of those very families- brnad new homeschoolers that were burdened with making sure they were "doing it right" and providing their sons with a quality education. May I encourage those of us that choose to take the responsibility of educating our children each and ever day? Our labors are not in vain! Keep up the hard work mom and dad. I beleive with all my heart that in the near future our cherished blessings with have hearts full of gratitude.

Now back to the front line. No wonder I love homeschooling! I cna't describe the excitement when you realize I just taught my kid that- whether it is reading that first word, finishing an algebraic equation, or baking cupcakes. I was singing the ABC song this afternoon and had to stop to care for Rachel when all of a sudden I heard Jonathan say, "T Momma, T!" Yep, sure enough T was the next letter. And last night he blurted out, "1... 2... 3!"

Tomorrow morning when we hit the books again, I'll be encouraged. I wouldn't have it any other way!

Colleges Nationwide Recruit Homeschool Grads

Gray, TN, January 4, 2011, The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine, LLC - As the modern-day homeschool movement confidently marches forward into its fourth decade, colleges and universities are opening wide their doors to welcome its mature, prepared graduates to their ranks. Homeschoolers score an average of 37 percentile points above the national average on standardized achievement tests and typically score above average on the SAT and ACT, statistics that apparently have caught the eye of college admissions personnel. Since 1999, the number of homeschoolers in the United States has increased by 74%, and today thousands of young men and women are graduating from high school-at home.

Colleges are employing a wide variety of strategies aimed at recruiting homeschoolers, including strong representation at homeschool conventions, direct mailing campaigns, and promotions in catalogs, on their websites, and in publications such as The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine, the nation's most popular print magazine for homeschoolers. Colleges sponsor "Homeschool College Days" for juniors and seniors, and at Wheaton College, where nearly 10% of the freshman class is represented by homeschool grads, applicants can even be put in touch with current Wheaton students who were homeschooled. Regent University's website heralds the school as "the right choice for home-schooled students," and the U.S. Air Force Academy's website includes guidelines addressed specifically to homeschooled applicants.

A number of institutions have appointed "homeschool liaison and recruitment specialists" to serve incoming freshmen and their families. In her 2009 article titled "'We Love Homeschoolers!' Prominent Colleges Jump on the Recruiting Bandwagon," author Claire Novak, herself a homeschool grad, quoted one such specialist, who said, "As the number of homeschooled students grow, colleges are finding it's a market you can't ignore."

Nearly 30% of Bob Jones University's current students were educated at home. BJU's website reports: "As a group, our homeschooled students are among the best students in the entire university student body. They have added a fresh dimension to the body of conventionally schooled students. We consider them a real asset." Stanford Magazine reported that "among the nation's elite universities, Stanford has been one of the most eager to embrace them [homeschoolers]. . . .[H]omeschoolers bring a mix of unusual experiences, special motivation and intellectual independence that makes them a good bet to flourish on the Farm." Savannah College of Art and Design "welcomes home-schooled students and recognizes the outstanding talent and achievements of this diverse group of well-rounded individuals." And these are just a few examples of the favorable reputation that homeschooled students have earned.

Recent studies confirm the academic success of homeschoolers who attend college. Citing results of a 2010 survey, the Journal of College Admission reports that "homeschool students possess higher ACT scores, grade point averages (GPAs) and graduation rates when compared to traditionally-educated students."

Seth Back, a homeschooler who took and passed the GED test at age 15 and is currently enrolled at Harvard, is confident that he was "better prepared for certain college situations than students who had been through the public/private school system." During the past five years, Seth earned a juris doctor degree, passed the California Bar Exam, earned a master's degree in church history, and studied at Oxford-all while managing his own consulting business. He credits homeschooling with fueling a love of learning and teaching him to take personal responsibility for his education, which included pursuing a wide variety of opportunities for his personal enrichment. He is but one example of the thousands of motivated, successful, visionary students who have benefited tremendously from their home education.

Colleges are looking for young people like Seth. They are excited about the exceptional potential presented by homeschool graduates and are vigorously pursuing their attention.
As college professors nationwide are given the opportunity to influence and further equip homeschool graduates, surely they will be refreshed and encouraged by this new breed of "independent thinkers" who are filling their classrooms. Wise college professors will carefully take advantage of the privilege they are being given in those classrooms-to build on the strong foundation laid by these students' former teachers: their parents.

January 1, 2011

Welcome 2011.... Been wondering if I'll refer to this year as two thousand eleven or twenty eleven. Eddie and I "celebrated" at noon on the 31st instead of midnight (even though I ended up awake with little ones anyway!). The last day of the year at Dooley is crazy- but Eddie snuck away with me for a little while. I snuck away from the house. And we had lurch at our favorite Chinese restaurant. I think this counts as our first official date since Little Miss Rachel arrived.

Normally by now, I have all my objectives for the new year written out and placed in my planner. On Sunday afternoons, I choose a category from my list (along with my ) to review that week. Thought you might enjoy seeing my categories... and thought it might get me motivated to do some planning and praying about what God's plan is for the year ahead.

  • My marriage
  • My friends
  • My family
  • My home
  • My stuff
  • My health
  • Traveling
  • Education
  • Recreation

So... what do want to do and accomplish in 2011?

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
